We intentionally excluded the “flourish” argument, which is, the utopian idea that AI will simply usher in an era of peace and plenty. Why? Because the premise of this debate is that we are not currently responsible entities. The chaotic, competitive, and shortsighted path we are on does not lead to flourishing; it leads to a catastrophic loss of control.
If humanity were to decide, right now, that it wants to survive this age, there are several critical mandates it would have to undertake. But to truly understand the danger, you must grasp why nearly every one is almost impossible, not because of the technology, but because of us.
First, we would have to control who builds these giant, transformative models and simultaneously ban fully autonomous weapons. But this runs headlong into the Lust for Power. We are asking nations to give up their single greatest strategic, military, and economic advantage. In a world defined by Tribalism, there will be no voluntary disarmament when the prize is global dominance.
Second, we would have to prove these systems are safe before their release. But this is a Philosophical and Technical Problem. We don’t yet possess the science to solve the “Alignment Problem”, which is, translating messy, contextual human values into clean mathematical objectives for a machine we cannot fully predict. This is an act of Technical Hubris.
Even if we did, we can’t solve the Black Box Problem. When an unexplainable AI denies a loan or a medical diagnosis, how do you assign legal liability? Our Inflexible Institutions, built for a previous era, will be bypassed by Corporate Evasion.
Third, we would have to completely restructure our economies and our education systems. This is the Ideological and Institutional Problem. Preparing for mass white-collar unemployment would require radical solutions that challenge our most Rigid Ideologies about work and wealth.
Furthermore, we would need to scrap and rebuild global education to teach critical thinking against algorithmic manipulation. This is a 15-year project that would require overcoming massive Institutional Inertia. We have not even begun.
Finally, and most importantly, we would have to protect truth, listen to warnings, and learn to cooperate. This is the Human Nature Problem.
We need to verify truth in an age of deepfakes, but we are mired in Existential Mistrust and fragmentation. We would need a global disaster planning office, but our political systems are designed for Myopia and are famous for the Dismissal of Cassandra Warnings.
We would have to promote global cooperation over tribalism. But if we cannot align humanity with itself, if we cannot stop fighting over borders and resources then we have no hope of aligning a vastly superior intelligence with our species’ best interests. We are, by nature, seemingly incapable of seeing our Shared Fate.
The irony is cruel. The technological problem of controlling AI may, in the end, be solvable. The human problem of controlling our own worst instincts may not be.
The failure of the AI Age, when it comes, will not be a software glitch. It will be a governance failure. It will be a moral failure. It will be the inevitable consequence of a species that had all the warnings, all the data, and all the capability, but simply lacked the collective will to act like the intelligent beings it claimed to be.
